Guitar Solo?

Ok, I just got back from Fine Arts which is an Assembly of God talent show sort of but it is also a contest.I performed a guitar solo that I wrote, the time limit is 5 minutes so I had tons of time and I basically wrote the song with an Intro,Verse1,Chorus,Verse 2, Chorus, Bridge, and Outro. The Intro is a lick that I wrote from a blues scale, the 1st verse is a mix of rhythm and short licks, the chorus is rhythm, the 2nd verse is almost the exact same thing as verse 1, the bridge is picking and tremolo picking and a lil rhythm, the outro is palm muting and tremolo strumming a muted power chord progression. The chords are E, D, %26amp; C.I am going to be performing this w/ a drummer at a Youth Service tht my youth group is having in 3 weeks. My youth pastor told me tht he wanted me to play this but tht he really wanted me to wale on the guitar..like play a 15 second solo or sumthing. The problem is that I have never written a full solo only licks.Any ideas on how to write the solo would b great

Can't you string some licks together? Also sometimes it pays to use the same notes used in the song cause as a musician you should know that the human brain thrives on patterns and loves to recognize sounds. Hopefully you know the notes of every position on your fretboard. If not Google yourself a chart. Follow a basic pattern (scales are good) maybe try a pattern from the E major scale and the D and C major scales going up and down. Mix them up (for the E go up for the D go down) and string them together see what you can come up with.

Record a backing track using the chord progression and noodle around till you get something you like. That way you wont piss off the band by making them play over and over all day.......Remember that the solo has a start (people usually remember the start so make it memorable) you can do whatever the hell you want in the middle, but remember its cool to try and take the song somewhere, try to build up some tension and end on a high...people will remember the ending if you leave em on a high, lots of overbends high up the neck will sound more wailin than playing down the nut end.

15 seconds is nothing....you could probably get away with stringing 5 or 6 licks together if you have to?
Because you composed the song you had mentioned I would suspect you know all the melodies and harmonics that go with it. Using your entire fretboard and the chords that make the song, play your solo through inspiration. Make it up as you go along and invent a new attack. Keep the chords formed at least half-way as you solo--that way, if you err on a note there will be no dissonance.

Your approach depends on what type of guitar you will be playing--an electric or acoustic--and how inspired you feel at the moment. Good luck.
homework, homework, and homework!

I suggest get some books (or find sources on the web) dealing with arrangements. As for your solo, do you have a book of scales? best thing I can think of is try the major scale for the solo, and work out something interesting. I also suggest throwing on Satriani's "Alien" CD to see how he arranges, and draw inspiration from there (on arrangement, tones, etc). Oh, and the obvious....

Practice, ptractice, and practice!!!
