Unfair!! I'm writing a paper!!!?

At my high school, it is demanded that members of the school band play as teh "Pep Band" during sporting events. Our teacher was upset that many incoming freshman cut band from their schedule because they dont have the time to perform at these assemblies.

So not to discourage students from joining band, our director tried a new policy- a voluntary Pep Band. Ever since the year started, less and less people have been showing up. Now, the Head of the Fine Arts department at our school is getting him into trouble for "Not performing his job for teh students of hte school".

What I don't understand is this: If students don't want to play at Pep Band, why should they? Half of the sports teams play CD's, anyways. They obviously show that they don't want us playing. Our band teacher told us "we play because we are here to support the athletes, even though the athletes don't want us playing".

Even worse- our sports teams suck. However, our Fine Arts program has been listed as one of the top in hte country. So why is our school discriminating? It's like they think that the sports teams are more important than music departments, so since we're less important, we should have to waste our time doing something we don't want to do while perorming for people who don't care? Why do we have to 'support' the athletic department?

I'm not saying elimintate Pep Band- if you want to go, you should be allowed to. But don't punish us, or our Band Director, for forcing us into something that we don't want to do. Even worse- htere is a book full of courses that you take during the shcool year- and no where in it does it say that band members must attend games! When i signed up for band, I didn't sign up for Pep Band!!!

please- how can I write a petition or a persuasive letter to hte people in charge to remove this activity from being manditory? I feel very strongly about it!!!

It sounds like you already have some good points, though you could probably express them a little more formally.

If I were you, I would add that Band is a class, not an extracurricular activity, and that extracurricular activities connected to it are therefore not binding and should not affect credits received for the class itself.

In your letter, write a brief introduction stating that you object to the practice of requiring band members to play at sporting events. In the body of the letter, explain each of your reasons, giving examples of why you are right in each case and why requiring pep band is wrong. In the conclusion, say something like, "I hope you will consider my arguments. Thank you for your attention." Sign it "Respectfully, [Your Name]." Remember to use business letter format.

It might help if you get up a petition and attach it to the letter. Try getting students who aren't in band to sign as well. (The choir and orchestra have a vested interest in the welfare of the music department, so try them. Try the athletes as well--if they really don't want the band at games, they should express it.)

Just so you know, your situation is a common one. Administrators often force band directors to bring their bands to sporting events at which they are unwanted by the teams and fans, then use poor turnout as an excuse to cut funding for the music program. Sports are the top priority at almost all American high schools. Disgusting, isn't it? %26gt;_%26lt;

convert what you wrote in here into a paper directed twords them. Keep to the point don't wonder off,
i would write this-

i think you should stop forcing people to join the prep-band and let them do what they want to do. even the team doesn't even want us to be playing.

just leave the prep band to those who are interested. and by the way, you ain't the boss of me, you ain't my daddy or my mama. so i perhaps that you should stop this nonsesne and give people a break.

- thank you -

from - whoever

so that is how i would do it.

but i hope you get out of prep-band
